Hurts’ Return Is a Medical Decision Before a Football Decision
Why a blood clot can create a longer absence—and what remains unknown.
What Philadelphia has confirmed
The Eagles reported a superficial calf-vein clot on an ultrasound in London, followed by movement on a subsequent scan after the return to Philadelphia. Hurts is ruled out against Carolina while doctors determine treatment. The statement does not specify the clot’s length, its proximity to the deep veins, a medication regimen or a return date.
Superficial does not mean inconsequential
A superficial clot is in a vein nearer the skin; it is not the same diagnosis as deep-vein thrombosis. The concern is whether it extends toward or into the deep venous system. A clot’s location and extent, associated DVT and individual risk factors affect treatment. The reported movement does not by itself establish that Hurts has DVT or a pulmonary embolism.
Why treatment can change the football calendar
Thrombosis Canada describes different pathways. Some short, isolated, lower-risk superficial clots can receive symptom treatment and monitoring. Longer superficial clots may require about 45 days of anticoagulation. Clots close to a deep-vein junction or associated with DVT can require more intensive treatment, often around three months. These are general clinical pathways, not a prescription or prognosis for Hurts.
Feeling better and being cleared are different
Anticoagulants reduce clot progression risk but increase bleeding risk. American College of Cardiology guidance identifies football as a high-impact sport where anticoagulation raises particular concerns. Normal mobility or exercise being encouraged does not mean that being tackled is safe. Return decisions require individualized specialist assessment; an apparent improvement in calf discomfort alone cannot settle them.
The responsible football conclusion
An extended absence is medically plausible if anticoagulation is required. It is not yet established. Philadelphia must prepare its backup plan for uncertainty while allowing the medical decision to lead. We should not publish a six-week or three-month absence as if it has been announced, and a general treatment duration is not an automatic return-to-play date.
