Mahomes Returned. Kenneth Walker Changed the Conversation.
Patrick Mahomes returning healthy was the headline Kansas City needed. Kenneth Walker III may have supplied the development that changes how defenses have to play the Chiefs.

Mahomes is back
Nine months after his knee injury, Mahomes returned against Denver and immediately showed that mobility remains part of his game. Kansas City did not need him to carry every snap, and that may be the most important part of the night.
Walker changed the workload
Walker ran for 173 yards in his Chiefs debut and scored twice. He gave Kansas City a physical, explosive rushing threat capable of punishing defenses that devote too much attention to Mahomes and the passing game.
A different equation for defenses
Kansas City has spent years forcing opponents to choose what they are willing to concede to Mahomes. A dependable high-level running game adds another answer. If Walker’s Week 1 impact becomes sustainable, lighter boxes become dangerous and heavier boxes create opportunities elsewhere.
Still only the beginning
Walker does not need 173 yards every week for the acquisition to matter. The more useful measurement is whether Kansas City can consistently run when the situation demands it — particularly when opponents try to take away explosive passes.
