Health Watch: Which Absences Can Actually Change a Team?
Not every camp injury belongs in the same category. PFH separates health news by football consequence: season-changing losses, lineup-shaping concerns and short-term monitoring.
Updated August 6, 2026
Tier 1 — Season and Structure Changing
- Carolina Panthers — Nic Scourton: A torn ACL removes an edge defender from the season plan. The larger issue is how Carolina redistributes pass-rush snaps and whether another player can replace the role rather than merely the roster spot.
- Atlanta Falcons — Michael Penix Jr.: Continued ACL rehabilitation deserves structural attention because quarterback availability affects installation, timing and the distribution of first-team work.
Tier 2 — Lineup and Role Shaping
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Tristan Wirfs / Vita Vea: Health concerns on both sides of the line matter because Tampa Bay's preferred style depends on stability in the trenches.
- Green Bay Packers — Tucker Kraft: PUP status is worth tracking because tight-end availability can affect both protection surfaces and personnel flexibility.
- New York Jets — Joseph Ossai: PUP time matters most through the pass-rush repetitions and rotation opportunities it creates for others.
- San Francisco 49ers — Christian Kirk / Gracen Halton / Vidarian Lowe: Calf, knee and ankle issues become important if accumulated absences begin changing installation work or depth-chart repetitions.
Tier 3 — Monitor, Don't Overreact
- San Francisco 49ers — Romelo Height: Calf cramping is a monitor item unless it develops into a longer limitation.
- Tennessee Titans — Mitch Trubisky: General muscle tightness was described as day to day.
- Tennessee Titans — Calvin Ridley: A stomach illness caused a missed workout but does not by itself suggest a football-structure concern.
- Washington Commanders — Tress Way: A minor undisclosed issue is worth noting while the club manages the position.
Positive Movement
- Baltimore Ravens — Nnamdi Madubuike: His removal from PUP is more than a transaction; his interior presence can expand Baltimore's pressure and coverage menu.
- Chicago Bears — Montez Sweat: Activation from the non-football illness list restores an important edge presence to practice work.
PFH Take Health reporting becomes useful when it answers a football question. Who must change roles? Which calls disappear? Who gains meaningful repetitions? The injury itself is only the beginning of the story.
