Philadelphia’s Playoff Problem Is Bigger Than One Quarterback
A crowded injury report threatens the support a backup quarterback needs.
Thursday’s official report listed 24 Eagles: seven nonparticipants, ten limited and seven full participants. This is a practice report, not a list of 24 players ruled out. Hurts’ absence against Carolina is confirmed; the remaining participation entries should not be converted into final game designations.
The complete Thursday practice list
| Participation | Players and listed injuries |
|---|---|
| Did not participate | Saquon Barkley — hamstring; Michael Carter II — abdomen; A.J. Epenesa — back; Jalyx Hunt — knee/ankle; Jalen Hurts — calf; Will Shipley — foot; Dontayvion Wicks — hamstring. |
| Limited | Jakorian Bennett — knee; Marquise Brown — ankle; Grant Calcaterra — back; Landon Dickerson — knee; Jonathan Greenard — ankle; E.J. Jenkins — toe; Drew Kendall — knee; DeVonta Smith — hamstring/toe; Tyler Steen — shoulder; Eli Stowers — quad. |
| Full | Zack Baun — shoulder; Jihaad Campbell — knee/wrist; Jalen Carter — wrist; Arnold Ebiketie — shoulder; Marcus Epps — groin; Fred Johnson — knee; Andrew Mukuba — shoulder. |
Why the injuries compound
The difficult combination is a backup quarterback alongside uncertainty at running back, receiver and the offensive line. An effective running game and clean protection would help McKee; injuries in the positions that provide those supports narrow the staff’s options. Reduced receiving depth can also make it harder to punish a defense that crowds the line.
The line has changed for reasons beyond injury
The Eagles have opened practice windows for Dickerson, Bennett, Calcaterra and Stowers. Returning to practice is an encouraging step, not confirmation of activation or immediate full effectiveness. Lane Johnson’s retirement and Cam Jurgens’ trade are separate roster developments; they should not be counted as current injuries, although they also affect continuity.
What it means for January
At 2–3, Philadelphia still has a route back into the race. The concern is how many more games it must navigate with several position groups compromised together. A prolonged quarterback absence could make the margin thinner, particularly if the offense struggles to sustain drives and asks more of a depleted pass-rush rotation. That is a threat to postseason aspirations, not proof that the season is over.
The indicators worth following
Track actual activations and game availability, pressure allowed, early-down efficiency and whether the offense can finish drives without taking excessive risks. A shorter injury list matters only if players can contribute dependable snaps. The most useful next update will compare the final game designations with this Thursday snapshot.
